What are the issues related to IVC Filters?
IVC filters are implanted in the Inferior Vena Cava, just below the renal (kidney) veins. The filters are suppose to remain in the place they are inserted and at the precise angle at which they are originally inserted. Unfortunately almost all IVC Filter Models are prone to failure. The failure of an IVC Filter generally begins when the legs or struts of the IVC filter become dislodged from one side of the IVC Filter, causing the filter to Tilt from its proper angle. Once the filter Tilts the legs or struts may pierce or perforate the wall of the Inferior Vena Cava. IVC Filters are also prone to breaking apart or fracturing. Once a filter becomes dislodged or fractures, the filter can easily migrate or move to the heart or other organs causing serious and often life threatening complications.
The FDA has received over 1000 adverse event reports related to IVC Filter malfunction. Given that very few adverse events or complications with medical products that occur actually get reported to the FDA it is reasonable to believe that the large number of IVC Filter adverse event reports on file with the FDA represent only a fraction of the number of actual adverse events and complications that have occurred related to IVC Filters.
IVC Filter Dangers
One of the greatest dangers associated with IVC Filters stems from the fact that a IVC Filter complication like fracture or migration may occur without the IVC recipient feeling any pain or other symptoms until it is too late. An IVC filter can migrate to the heart of other organs yet cause no significant pain at first. Once an IVC Filter complication actually causes pain or other symptoms there may already be significant damage that could lead to severe injury or even death.
Protecting Your Health
The FDA issued an advisory in 2014 to surgeons that implant IVC filters telling them to monitor patients that receive IVC filter and to remove them as soon as possible once the severe threat of blood clots has subsided. This advisory may help to protect patients that received IVC filters after 2014 however, no protection is provided for the thousands of people who received IVC Filters before the FDA issued the advisory.
Many IVC Filter recipients are going to their doctor to seek an X Ray or other image of their IVC Filter to insure that it has not malfunctioned and posses a significant health risk. This precaution is warranted for those concerned with the possible dangers posed by IVC Filters.
