19 Jul Lawsuits Filed Against C.R. Bard over IVC Filters
On May 2014 the FDA issued an advisory related to the dangers associated with IVC Filters
“The FDA recommends that implanting physicians and clinicians responsible for the ongoing care of patients with retrievable IVC filters consider removing the filter as soon as protection from pulmonary embolism is no longer needed.”
“The FDA encourages all physicians involved in the treatment and follow-up of patients receiving IVC filters to consider the risks and benefits of filter removal for each patient. A patient should be referred for IVC filter removal when the risk/benefit profile favors removal and the procedure is feasible given the patient’s health status.”
Although the 2014 FDA advisory was welcome by those who have long been concerned about the safety of IVC Filters, the advisory did not go far enough to protect everyone at risk, especially those who were implanted with an IVC filter before the 2014 advisory.
IVC Filters The Silent Killer
The greatest danger posed by IVC Filters stems from the fact that IVC filter recipients may have ongoing problems with their IVC Filter and be completely unaware of the problem until it is too late. For many IVC filter recipients, the first symptom that is recognized when there is a problem, is death or sever injury.
IVC Filter devices may have migrated to the patient’s heart or other organs, blocked major blood flow, broken apart (fractured) , pierced the Inferior Vena Cava without causing any noticeable symptoms to the patient until it’s too late to prevent the problem with the IVC Filter from causing death or sever injury. It is the opinion of experts that all IVC Filter recipients, regardless of how long their IVC Filter is in place, seek medical attention to have the current condition of their IVC filter evaluated through X Ray or other imaging.
